New program helps provide food for Pitt County senior citizens

PITT COUNTY, NC (WITN) Some Pitt County senior citizens are now eligible for a federal program that gives out a free box of food every month.

The Executive Director at the Pitt County Council on Aging says there is a lot of food insecurity in Pitt County, especially for senior citizens.

The Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina says at least 2,200 seniors live at or below the poverty line in Pitt County.

They can now register for a federal food program which will help keep their pantries full.

It’s called the federal Commodity Supplemental Food Program.

In one week the Churches Outreach Network, Pitt County Council on Aging, and dozens of volunteers have registered about 300 senior citizens.

To register you must be 60-years old…
